Speaking of Canadian steampunk, and by that I mean Canadian Victorian Scientific Romances, Cory Gross's blog is one of the best on the web for all things related to VSF and Extraordinary Voyages!Mike Perschonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09335943113292616702noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1069343736818411279.post-70456072417492728312010-08-19T18:04:05.381-06:002010-08-19T18:04:05.381-06:00This is late, but I was dealing with my own goings...This is late, but I was dealing with my own goings on for a bit...<br /><br />"It would be interesting to theorize why Canada lacks such devotion to the flag"<br /><br />Because the flag doesn't represent the same thing to Canada, politically or legally, that it does to Americans. For America, the flag is the symbolic representation of the nation and everything for which it stands. For Canada, that same role is occupied by the monarch. We are a constitutional monarchy, so when you pledge allegiance, you do not pledge it to the flag: "I, [name], do Solemnly swear (affirm) that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Queen of Canada, Her Heirs and Successors according to law, forever. So help me God."Cory Grosshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12141983255020503557noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1069343736818411279.post-5811387581204577462010-08-11T16:31:35.440-06:002010-08-11T16:31:35.440-06:00Thanks Tina! For symbolism, I'd choose the last one I did, with the tri-branched maple leafs - sea to shining sea, with all the colours representative of the UK and France.Mike Perschonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09335943113292616702noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1069343736818411279.post-37161603628401951942010-07-29T12:04:55.209-06:002010-07-29T12:04:55.209-06:00Depending on your view of national flags and their...Depending on your view of national flags and their role in nationalism, the lack of symbolism surrounding our flag may not be bad thing! :) It would be interesting to theorize why Canada lacks such devotion to the flag, or to write an alternative history where events have transpired to inscribe such devotion.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
